If you’ve ever considered learning programming languages such as JavaScript, HTML, or CSS, but put it off for whatever reason, you may want to think again. A few reasons it pays to know programming languages include:
§ Marketability.
As long as the programming languages you know are in use, you’ll be at a distinct advantage in the job market. Knowing programming languages can be the skill that sets you apart from your competitors. And if you know how to write code using tools like NotePad or how to do tasks like transferring large files with a program like FileZilla; then you will have more marketability.
§ Independence.
Knowing programming languages allows you to make updates or design websites on your own without having to rely on or pay others to do it for you. Knowing programming is empowering and opens up numerous possibilities for you.
§ Savings.
If you know programming enough to write code and build websites, you could save yourself hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by doing the work yourself instead of hiring someone else.
Now that you’ve made the decision to learn programming, here are some tips and tricks to help you:
§ Take a class. While you can teach yourself, you might be able to pick up things faster if you take a class from your local public library or through continuing education courses at a nearby college campus. Even online classes can be helpful. Learn about things like programming software like Putty for SSH and Telnet and others like Tight VNC for remote computer usage.
§ Ask for help. If you have colleagues, friends, or relatives who know programming languages (you’d be surprised at the number of people who do!), consider asking them for a few pointers. Chances are they are passionate about it themselves and would love to share what they know.
§ Read a few books. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of books on programming available and they are excellent ways to teach yourself programming. Just make sure you get the latest editions.
As you learn programming, remember that it’s not going to happen overnight! Be patient, practice, and it will come.
